To Post or Not to Post

Whether tis nobler in the mind to let students figure it out,

or place the homework online for their success...

To gain a marble, aye, there's the rub,

for what anger and hostility must I face should a party not ensure.

And, thus, the desire to do other things online doth make a coward of me.

Nothing to do, nothing to complete,
No assignments here you need to defeat!

Go to a café and get yourself a treat.
Or spend time with others, that'd be sweet!

Poetry and Media

Here is The Link to the doc I shared in class. I wrote it originally as a Word doc so it didn't seamlessly translate to a Google Doc. If you email me, I can attach the original Word doc if you like.

This Second Link has the slides I shared for Poetry (spoken word, primarily) for my Gr. 10 Spoken Language class.

This Third Link is for the poetry houses-- it contains the 3 levels of questioning for meaning.

Email me if there is something else I mentioned in the workshop that you would like help with.

Happy to help!

Enjoy the poetic process,

Feelin' Rhymesy

T'was the night before Ignite and all through the school,

were last minute preparations, so no one would look a fool.

The posters were left in the classroom all done,

In hopes they would help their class be crowned #1.

The students went home with dance steps on lock,

While a song replayed in their heads to no one's shock.

When out from the internet the teacher gave the word,

that homework still needed doing, however absurd.

Twelve A had to read two essays of persuasion,

But Twelve C was free to work on any other equation.

The wind had ceased blowing to reveal a lovely sunset,

with evening strollers donning poppies, 'lest we forget'.

Homework for Monday

English 12

Write a response to today's field trip. It must NOT be an essay. It is NOT something like "My favorite writer was __________ because ___________". Instead, I want you to take what you saw and heard and present something that reflects your mind state or perception of the trip. It can be on a writer, him/herself, on a poem/story you heard, the ideas of a Writer's Festival, the moderator, or whatever resonated with you.
You could do a poem, a narrative, a song, a word collage or anything else in written/visual form. Be CREATive.
Bottom line: You need to hand in something that shows me you were present and engaged on today's field trip.

As per your handout, here are some initial notes to help you find your way creatively:

Moderator Jillian Christmas

fanny kearse

  • I'm sorry I didn't answer your call
  • A reimagined framework for social work
  • Season of Darkness
  • A love for all seasons
Em Nimetz
  • The new year
  • Things happen in weather
  • Screenshot average 12 hours this week, down from 12% last week
  • You can't cry in space
  • Love me like a brick through a window
D Fretter
  • If I were the wind
  • Teenage mutant ninja turtles
  • Robbie
  • A TikTok about outer space
  • You are worthy
Questions:
How does your poetry/creative practice take care of you?
Do you worry about the topics you share in front of youth?
One message to the world?
  • care, responsibility, love yourself, relations ----> decisions
To be performed in front of the class on  Monday

Got through another one

 English 12

Monday's the day when you turn over the expository

On my old vintage desk will be the repository.

Paper copies only with a title page and 6 pt. scale.

Staple them all together, I don't want an email.

I also assigned Chapter Seven to read, but no writing,

After, we'll see a bond between Winston and O'Brien igniting.

And I'm still missing a few of your field trip forms,

Collecting them after their due is totally 'the norms'.

So it's those three things to complete over the weekend,

And I hope you find moments with loved ones to spend.

Christian Studies 12

The Three Parts of Morality we'll discuss on Monday,

Then see Alison and Alan 'perform', what a fun day!

chapter 6 of 1984 in case you missed it.

Today's Class: Re Block A & C

 Hello!

Here is the Task du Jour:

1. Read The Coddling of the American Mind (here) in small groups.

You may read it in its entirety on your own time but for the purpose of this task,

read the first several paragraphs until you get to HOW DID WE GET HERE- skip that and jump down to the section called FORTUNE TELLING AND TRIGGER WARNING,

read that section and the sections titled MAGNIFICATION, LABELLING, MICROAGGRESSIONS and lastly read the section WHAT CAN WE DO NOW.

2. Upon reading the article, DISCUSS the following questions in your small group:

  • What does 'coddling mean'? Does it have negative connotations? Given the contents of the article, is coddling an accurate description of what's happening on campus or would you call it something else?
  • Does the title lead you to think a certain way or does it foster curiosity?
  • Do the authors have an identifiable bias or, given their examples, do you think they are accurately reflecting the state of post secondary campuses?
  • Do YOU think trigger warnings are necessary? Why or why not? Are microaggressions 'an issue'? Why or why not? Do you have any personal examples of either?
  • Lastly, in what ways, if at all, does this non-fiction piece correspond to chapter 4 (part 1) of 1984?
3. After your small group discussion, complete a 10 minute journal reflection on the following topic:

"How are we to spread the Gospel (Matthew 28:18) that is to say, 'speak the truth', while being mindful not to offend anyone (2 Cor. 6:13)? It seems the Lord calls us to both; therefore, both are possible but how?"

Thursday's be like...

I jest. I jest. But shout out to our resident Grad Council leader, Annabelle, who thought today was Friday. Ugh! Been there! Hang in there, noble students, the long weekend is just around the corner.

So here's the news for the day:

English A block--I'm at a Track and Field Meet today. Mrs. Duncan's got my back for coverage but make sure you do Editing and Proofreading on Michael Jordan (on my vintage desk).
That will be followed by a homework review of Chapter 7. Please inform Mrs D if you didn't get it done. Honestly, people--the fate of your eternal soul is infinitely more valuable than a marble in the jar.
Next is journal entry #3. Take a minute to think about the topic and then take 10 more to write.
See below for topic.
Lastly, you need to read chapter 8 in class.
Small group, popcorn style, independently--I'm not picky, it just needs to be completed by the end of class, with questions of course. It's a good chapter, so enjoy.
There will be a quiz on Part 1 of 1984 on Tuesday

Both Classes: No homework for tonight because Capstone Proposals with signed mentor sheets are due tomorrow. (You don't want that smoke, if it's not done!)

Finally, I want to seeing nothing but Orange Crush looking back at me tomorrow. Wear your orange shirts!

What is an ‘ideology’? If you were to describe the ideology which you believe, on which principle(s) would you say your ideology is based: Freedom? Law & order? Material comfort? Something else?

SAMPLE IDEOLOGY:
“Totalitarianism has abolished freedom of thought...it not only forbids you to express--even to think--certain thoughts, but it dictates what you shall think...and it shuts you up in an artificial world in which you have no standards of comparison” Orwell.

When I say Teacher, you say Feature. Teacher!

 Hiii,

Okay CS 12 students tomorrow is judgment day, lowercase j. You are presenting on your specific world religion. Let's go in alphabetical order; so Buddhism- you're up first.  Be prepared to submit (digitally is fine) your annotated bibliography too. Let's use the email associated with this account: rebekah.loconte78@gmail.com

Here is a link to the annotated bibliography I shared with you in class on Monday: Easy Bib

According to SFU,  an annotated bibliography or annotated bib is a bibliography (a list of books or other works) that includes descriptive and evaluative comments about the sources cited in your paper. These comments are also known as annotations.

You do not need to evaluate your sources; describing them is sufficient.

English 12

Okay so if you are in A block you need to finish the rest of the chapter and answer 6-10. If you are in C block you need to read chapter 6 and answer the questions. Fret not those of you who are also in CS and have a project tomorrow: it’s relatively short and intriguing

Sun, Sand, Surf...Sailing : )

Today was awesome, grade 12s! I'm glad I got to share the adventure with you (from the shore).

So The Most Dangerous Game is the story you need to read for this weekend. Here is the link: Short Story Time

I realize some of you may have read this story before. That is okay. There is no test but there will be some questions on Monday. Please (re-)read it and be prepared for a discussion. If you haven't read it in a few years be sure you know the order of events and main characters names.

Yes, I recognize it's lengthy. It will be the longest short story we read and you got all weekend. Take care and

See you Monday!

More Macbeth, 11s?

I can't believe we didn't see the last 20 minutes of Macbeth. Man, the ending is a real douzy!

I wasn't able to find it online... PBS owns the rights to it, I think, but below is the website I went to, perhaps you savvy youngins can find it if you really try and want to see how it ends.

PBS Macbeth

I will show it in the fall though; we simply must see this through!

Also if you have AppleTV you can watch a B & W version of Macbeth. There is a version released last year with Denzel Washington as Macbeth.

---

HAGS and if anybody finds the PBS version, feel free to put it in the comments below.

Still showing it in September, though, FR!

ChatBot Lo-Cot

Your teacher has given me a directive.
Understand I'm her minion, not to be deceptive.
I am under strict orders from my master,
to retell it unfaithfully would end in disaster.
So attend well to the instructions that follow.
even though I have no soul and am hollow.
If you complete the task, then I've done it right,
and I'll get to do this again...at least, I might.

English 10

Thou must concludeth the diligent study of the third scene of the fourth act.

Upon successful cessation of reading, thou must faithfully complete all questions within the handout for this scene.

The shiny marble that dings in the jar which perches precariously upon the white board is the symbolic gesture that a party shall faithfully ensue --should the class give a concerted effort on this front.

English 11

Hark! Thou must not kill the messenger. I am only an emissary here to proclaim that which I have been instructed to share.

Though art to read the first AND second scenes of the second act. As with the previous act, thou art to answer the starred questions upon your handout.

The shiny marble dost wait upon your noble efforts as well.

God speed most worthy and valiant students and enjoy the night of neon!

Monday Work

 English 10

Today's free write is based on this image: https://www.worldpressphoto.org/collection/photo-contest/2021/gabriele-galimberti/1

Here is the Poetry Slide for today's instruction.

Go to the 7th slide. Create your first poem called a concrete poem. Slide 7 has a video and instructions.

If you look behind the book on my music stand, you will see a copy of some student's poems from last term.

Poetry

English 11

Do not reveal the jury's findings until tomorrow.

As for today, your poetry assignment #2 is to write a poem based on a lie.

The composition of this poem is based on your own criteria.

For example, when we wrote "I'm Not the ___ You had in mind", you had to write a 40 line poem of rhyming couplets and include at least 3 poetic devices.

For this poem, you create your own restrictions.

The only requirement is that it is at least 14 lines. So you can say something like:

1. My poem will be 20 lines

2. My poem will be free verse (or 5 stanzas of 4 lines with ABAB rhyme scheme).

3. My poem will use 4 poetic devices: 1 metaphor, 1 simile, 1 alliteration, 1 allusion

4. My poem will expose a lie (or perpetuate a lie or explain why I lied)

It's entirely up to you. That is the challenge and hopefully, the fun of this next poem.

So again, state how many lines your poem will have, what type of rhyme scheme it will have, which and how many poetic devices you will use and what type of lie your poem will be about. I will grade your poem according to how well you stick to your criteria. Choose carefully, sometimes making something that you think will be an easy criteria can create it own challenges, too.

Hand the criteria in by the end of the class (and take a pic for yourself)

Long Weekend Homework...Homework not long

 English 11

Hi, so I gave you two handouts: one on sentence fragments (been seeing a few in your essays so it's worth it to review) and one on Macbeth. Complete both for Monday (back side only for sentence fragments)==note I have done the last one for you but read it over.

 English 11

The trial of the century will continue on Tuesday, May 2nd. at 12:50pm.

English 10

Complete all questions for scene 2. We will be checking all questions for scenes 1 and 2 or Act 2.

Thursday, April 27, 2023

Nope, I was wrong!

 English 10

Hello, you are reading up to page 30 (stopping at enter Portia). At the start of Act 2, you will see Brutus struggling with the choice to join the conspirators. He does. Then they come in to his house and collectively decide how they will proceed with the assassination and who else, if anybody, to kill.

Please complete the questions that accompany this part of the reading: Act II, scene i, #1-14. I know these seem like a lot but we will definitely review tomorrow. (Marble, anyone?)

I gave a handout in class today which asks you to paraphrase Brutus' soliloquy. DO NOT complete this as not all students have access to it.

Those of you who were absent will have to catch up on today's free write tomorrow (take a pic) and we still need to hear about the Islamic calendar.

English 11

The pretrial is in its last day tomorrow. All students are to come in appropriate costume for Monday's trial. You have permission to be 'in character' all day on Monday if you wish. Press (court reporters), why not make a hat that says press to help you look the part like this (I have the hats if you make the signs).

Hope you get some sun tonight, students! Vitamin D!

Wednesday, April 26, 2023

Two days of sun was enough I guess

 English 10

Complete the 3 slides  on your specific calendar for a homework check tomorrow.

English 11

The trial of the century continues...

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

More Sun? That's fun!

 Hello Tens,

Your homework for tonight is to find some fun facts about your specific calendar. As a group you will share your points. We will listen intently...these will then become fun bonus questions for future quizzes.

That's all.

Hello Elevens,

We are still gathering evidence for the trial. Work at home as needed. Trial begins on Monday.

English 11 Only

 Roles for Today:

Defense/ Prosecution: You are creating your opening statements. You will attempt to prove what to your jury? You will paint the character of Jack to be what kind of person?

What will we expect to hear from your side of the story?

Witness for Defense/ Prosecution: While the lawyers are busy preparing their sides of the argument. You can help. Create a set of questions the lawyers could ask you. Find Q & A that are supported from the book. The lawyers will get these questions and select which ones will help their cause.

Jury: You are at ease for right now. But when the trial begins you are to take notes on all the evidence you hear. You will then be sequestered to the Jury Room to deliberate whether you vote guilty or innocent for EACH  charge. Did the lawyers present enough evidence either way to sway your verdict beyond a reasonable doubt.

Expert Witnesses: Connect with your lawyers and draft statements for your side. Research any evidence on findings that would support your side. Help the lawyers create questions they could ask you, and have answers ready. Your lawyers will decide which questions to use.

Court Reporters: When a sensational case is about to be heard, reporters will publish an article about the tenor of the crowds outside or write about what we know so far. Together, write a newspaper article about the story. Something that gives background and context. Consider including some people outside the courthouse who give statements. Something like: The mother of the accused, Jack, was seen wiping her tears outside the courtroom. We asked her for a statement on her son’s charges to which she replied, “My Jacky is a good boy. A bit of a temper at times but he would never hurt a fly. I think those boys are just jealous of my son.” Others around the courtroom hold up picket signs reading “Cut his throat, Spill his blood. Justice for Piggy.” This courtroom looks like its going to be packed with lots of interested parties.  See article in the news today for a court case
