Snowless Friday

English 11

Two days off and time for another story,
in it the brother of the narrator gets all the glory.
There may be some parallels to the Prodigal Son
Make a note if you see then, but there could be none.
I should,of course, mention this one's "The Charmer"
and, in a way, the brother builds up the narrator's armour.
You also must finish your journalism write-up,
Make sure it's done well, but don't stay the whole night up.

Report Cards--Not!

English 11

Time to start your poem if you've only been stalling,
Include your best vocab--avoid words like LOLing.
And while we're at, ditch "snake" and ditch "rat"
I think you know where I'm going with that.
This poem is due on the last day of February,
I know it seems daunting but it's not all that scary:
Remember to write in couplets like you see me do here
If you really get struck, test it out on a peer.
Just do 10 lines and you're a quarter of the way through,
I'm really looking forward to seeing what you can do!
In case you need details, see below for the link,
it's about defying the stereotypes that other people think.

English 11

To all my students who are in grade ELEVEN:

Sorry to everyone for my "grade ten" mental slip,
Kinda embarrassing, like when up the stairs you trip.
Tonight's homework is brief so I will be too,
Read the short story and don't stop till you're through.
There are no questions but be prepared to be chatty,
Cuz we'll have a discussion led by Hellen and Patty.

Poetry is....

English 10

I'm going for an evening walk today
to keep Ray Bradbury's 2053 at bay.
I will fight against the beckoning Screen!
If you succumb I'm not trying to demean
you. Or any other person who feels the pull.
Technology, over our eyes, drops the wool.
Many of us love the hygge of that fleece,
But I'll be the leader in that V of geese.
Take a walk, take a jog, take a spin, take a stand!
Decide for yourself, where's your line in the sand?

Tonight: read Boys and Girls before the setting of the sun,
It's kinda lengthy, but you're only reading to fifty one.
We'll talk about the hand-out 'poetry in voice',
There's a project in there, but you got some choice!

Loconte out.

Late Post

Sorry for the late post, grade 10s.
I forgot to pick up my kids at school (got the time mixed up), rushed to piano, and took my kid up to soccer at SFU only to see they cancelled practice.
What a day. It all went downhill after your class.
Anyway! Without further ado, here is your homework! Enjoy

Listen to This podcast on the role of poetry today.

It says its 54 minutes but you only have to listen to the first 23 minutes (the interview with Billy Collins).

We will revisit part of this podcast another day but for tonight, answer the following questions:

1. How does Michael Enright define poetry?
2. When does Billy Collins say people turn to poetry?
3. When does poetry speak best?
4. How did you personally like the poem "Morning"?
5. Do you think poetry is best defined as "words that don't go to the end of the page"?
6. Why did poems used to have a rhyme scheme and fixed meter?
7. Is poetry difficult because people don't read it OR do people not read poetry because it's difficult?
8. Write a statement about poetry.

Remember too to rewrite your perspectives and Brother Dear and read the handout I gave you at the end of class.
