 English 11

In class work for Poetry Thursday.

1. Get into the same groups you were in the last time we discussed the poem Advice to a Native Teen.

2. Read I Lost My Talk in the First Peoples Poetry Handout. In your small group for discussion only:

    a. What does the last line in the 2nd stanza mean?

    b. What does the last line in the 3rd stanza mean?

    c. Why does the speaker ask? Why not demand?

3. Read The Cross for Mary Magdalene and Me.

    a. As a group, create 3 questions for this poem. One for each stanza. Turn these in.

4. We are working on our first poem of term four. It is a poem based on a lie. Return to your desks. Create YOUR OWN criteria for how you want to construct this poem. Be specific so I know how to grade you.

Points to include. What will the poem be about? Challenging a lie? Perpetuating a lie? Exposing a lie? Something else?

How many lines or stanzas will it be (minimum of 14)?

Will there be a rhyme scheme or will it be free verse?

How many poetic devices will you use? Minimum of three? Which ones will they be?

Basically you will build the blue print for the poetic house you will build. You create your own challenge. So take some time to think about this. Turn in your sheet by the end of the class.

HW

Read Act 1, scene 1 and complete the questions.

Handout on my old school desk.
