Chapter 15 is omitted and we will begin reading Chapter 16 tomorrow.

    Take Home Essay Topics- Chapter 14: The People’s Republic

    Please write a 500 word essay (about 2 pages) on any one of the following topics. You may consult secondary sources, provided you cite them in a bibliography and use proper referencing.

    1. Attempt to explain why Mao is considered one of the most important figures of the twentieth century.
    2. Outline Mao’s belief that China’s agricultural base was the key to its revolution.
    3. Summarize the struggle between the Goumindang and the Communists up until 1949.
    4. Explain the Great Leap Forward.
    5. What was the purpose and result of Mao’s Cultural Revolution?
    6. Trace the relationship between China and the Soviet Union and explain how this relationship influenced China’s foreign policy toward the United States.
    7. Explain the reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping and contrast them to Mao’s attempt at reformation.
    8. What was the overall effect of Hong Kong’s reversion to Chinese control?
    9. Summarize China’s relationship to Taiwan and explain what has been the main conflict in that relationship?

    Note: If you are doing a Case Study or project on any of the above topics, you may not also write an essay on that topic.
